Jodhpur: the Sun City

Situated on the edge of the Thar Desert, Jodhpur is also called the “Sun City,” named for the overwhelming amount of bright and sunny days it experiences. It is home to famed forts, palaces, mausoleums, gardens, lakes, and towers, making it a hotspot for tourist activity.

Jodhpur, the former capital of Marwar state, was founded in 1459, by Rao Jodha, the chief of Rathore clan of Rajputs. The origin of this legendary town can be traced back to Mahabharata times. It finds mension as northern  Marwar in Jangladesh.

Since 13th century, it has been known as Marudesh or Marwar, a dessert of sand made immortal by Rathores, who claim direct descent from Lord Rama.

This bastion of Rathores is set on the threshold of the Thar-The Great Indian Desert and was once the part of the celebrated silk route from central Asia to the sea ports of Gujarat.

The historical town is a homogeneous blend of five hundred years of tumultuous history, rich traditions and modernity. Originally, the city was surrounded by a wall that extended up to 10 Kms, with eight gates facing in various directions.Today, the remains of the wall can be seen only at few places, as the city has grown extensively.

The wallet city is set at the foot of the Mehrangarth Fort and a tour through the winding lanes and brimming bazaars of the “old city” is quite an experience. The Sardar Bazaar is the traditional bazaar in the bustling old part of the city where all the shopping action is. Is a must-visit!!!

The city is also known for its thriving handcraft industry and promises you a delightful encounter with an array of tempting art and craft creations. The exquisite handicrafts make Jodhpur a treasure trove for shopper’s.

The Jondhpuri cuisine is also an experience in itself as people overhere and font of delicacies. No wonder the city is studded with plenty of fine sweet shops and restaurants.

Jodhpur, also known as the “gateway to the Tar” is a door way to the wonderland of shifting sand dunes and shrubs, rocky terrains and thorny trees. It is an integral part of the world renowned “Desert Triangle”, which includes Jaisalmer, Barner and Bikaner.
